POROS
The small, picturesque island of Poros is a popular destination for tourists, as it combines many advantages. The town of Poros is well-equipped to accommodate tourists, offering a plethora of rooms and hotels, bars and restaurants, organized beaches and other attractions. The latter include the ruins of the temple of the God Poseidon, originally built in the 6th century BC, the fortified islet of Bourtzi protecting the port of the main town since medieval times, the clock built on the top of the hill over the town with its great view across to the shores of the Peloponnese and especially to the lemon groves of Galatas, and the first naval base of the liberated Greek nation, built in 1830, today serving as a naval academy. The beaches of the island, most framed by lush green pine forests, are beautiful and well suited for swimming, while the northern coastline, inaccessible by land, offers many reclusive beaches for those who can reach them by sea. Finally, its proximity to the Eastern coast of the Peloponnesean mainland ?the crossing from and to Poros with the ferry is just 10 minutes long- establishes it as an ideal starting point for daily excursions all over the Southeastern Peloponnese. Apart from reaching the island by car with the ferry, there are daily bus lines from Athens, daily sea routes from Piraeus, and frequent sea lines connecting it with Leonidion, Ermioni, Nafplion, Tolo, Astros, Monemvasia, Neapolis, Cythera, and Geraka.
