METHANA

Information | Photo Gallery | Map

This small peninsula, jutting out of the body of the Peloponnesean mainland with but a narrow passage to keep it attached, is so akin to an island that it is administratively perceived as one, as it is considered a part of the Saronic Gulf islands and not a part of the Peloponnese. This land, once a center of volcanic activity, has long been associated with the one gift such a past can offer, its renowned thermal baths. While the quality of these waters is undisputed, it has long kept the other virtues of the peninsula in the shadows. Inhabited since prehistoric times, Methana has a long history, evidenced by the remnants of many settlements and fortifications of many different historical periods scattered all over the peninsula. Most impressive is the fortress of the Peloponnesean War, built in 425 BC, and the ancient throne atop the hill of throni. A chance to visit the crater of Kammeni, the largest of 35 volcanic craters spotted along the landscape of Methana, should not be missed, but the visitor should be equipped with shoes which will protect his feet from the intense heat (rubber soles are not advisable, as much of them may remain on the volcano...!). The islet of Agioi Anargyri at the entrance of the port of the town of Methana has a beautiful, well-organized beach. Among the countless other beaches worth visiting, the best known are Limiona, Vathy, Agioi Theodori, Paleokastro, Kalloni, Nisaki, Agios Georgios, and Steno. The infrastructure of Methana is adequate, making access to it and travelling within it easy. In addition to Piraeus, it is connected to the ports of the other islands of the Saronic Gulf, Epidavros, Ermioni, Porto Heli, Nafplion, and Tolo. Accommodations and facilities in Methana ascertain that no comfort will be missed.
