Europe faces once again the western shores of Asia through Chios, Lemnos, Samos and Lesvos. They actually set the eastern borders of the Aegean Sea and they spread across the coasts of Turkey. All these islands, having common characteristics concerning both history and land, were first inhabited in ancient times by lonians. Although somewhat less frequented, the islands have a very well-developed tourist infrastructure, capable of meeting the requirements of the most demanding holidaymakers, as well as congress organizers, while the smaller islands have recently become favorite weekend destinations for people who expect a holiday overflowing with customs and traditions. Lesvos, also known as Mytilini, is one of the four largest Greek islands with vast olive groves, dense pine forests, sandy beaches, monasteries and traditional houses. The island has a long history and was the homeland of Sapfo, the ancient Greek poetess while it is still a birthplace of significant artists. |
