The small, picturesque island of Psara is an ideal place for calm and relaxing holidays and is well known for its long fishing tradition. Situated to the west of the large island of Chios, it is in fact a complex of many small islets which covers an area of 42 sq.km and has a population of about 500 inhabitants, all of which reside in the largest among them. This is a land that has hardly felt the discovery of the wheel; most distances are simply too short not to go on foot. Its people were never many in numbers, a fact that they always made up for with astounding courage; this place, little more than a village, is the birthplace of such leading figures of the Greek War of Independence as Constantinos Canaris, Papanikolis, and Pipinos. In addition to the lovely sandy beaches of Lazareto, Limnos, Lakka, and Kato Gialos, one can visit impressive monuments such as Palaiokastro in Chersonisos, the ruins of the Mycenaean settlements and tombs, the Monastery of the Assumption on the top of the Profitis Elias hill, and many more. Due to its small size, there are few accommodation facilities in Psara. However, there is a boat taxi station, a bank, coffee shops, bars, taverns, a relaxing natural environment, and a friendly, hospitable local populace. The traditional products of the island are fresh fish and seafood, delicious honey and cream cheese. Access is possible through Chios by ferryboat service from Piraeus all year round. There is ferryboat connection with Chios, Mytilene, Volos throughout the year while during summer ferries link Psara and Syros. Visitors here can choose peace and solitude, or may mingle with other visitors and locals, as this is a place that favors genuine, hearty acquaintances that often lead to lasting friendships.
