Sikinos is a small island of just 40 sq.km. that validates the well known saying that ?valuable things come in small packages?. With a population of less than 250 permanent residents, it is still a rapidly developing island where visitors can enjoy the warm hospitality of the inhabitants within a natural environment of pure Cycladic beauty. It is believed that Sikinos was named after the son of Thoas, King of Limnos. Though inhabited since the Mycenaean era, its small size never allowed it to move into the spotlight of history. All through the middle ages and well into the 18th century, the island was plagued by pirate raids. Sikinos has many sights, such as the three windmills standing over the top of the settlements, the imposing monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, and the church of Pantanassa. Mavri Spilia (the Black Cave), the largest on the island, is also worth visiting. Though small in size, the infrastructure of Sikinos sets the standards for quality services. There are hotels and rooms-to-let in the main settlement of Chora. The local specialties are salads with fresh herbs, gherkins, and sour milk. Visitors can enjoy swimming in crystal clear waters, trekking and exploration. Flying dolphins depart from the port of Rafina to Sikinos (Attica) as well. Also, there is a ferry connection from Sikinos to the rest of the Cyclades.
